3 Floyds Brewing Co. is a craft brewery located in Munster, Indiana, United States. The brewery was founded in 1996 by Nick Floyd, his brother Simon Floyd, and their father Mike Floyd. The three had a passion for brewing beer and wanted to create a brewery that would produce unique, flavorful beers that were not readily available in the market.

The origins of 3 Floyds Brewing Co. can be traced back to the early 1990s when Nick Floyd was working at a liquor store in Chicago. He noticed that there were very few local craft beers available, and those that were available were not very good. Nick decided to start brewing his beer in his home and began experimenting with different recipes and techniques.

In 1996, Nick teamed up with his brother Simon and their father Mike, who had experience in the restaurant industry, to start 3 Floyds Brewing Co. The brewery’s first location was a small warehouse in Hammond, Indiana, where the Floyd family converted a former mechanic’s shop into a small-scale brewery.

In the early years, 3 Floyds struggled to gain traction in the market, and the brewery almost went bankrupt. However, the Floyd family’s dedication and passion for brewing unique, flavorful beers kept them going. They began to focus on producing high-quality, small-batch beers that would appeal to a niche audience of beer enthusiasts.

3 Floyds’ big break came in 2002 when they released their flagship beer, “Alpha King.” The beer, which is a hoppy American Pale Ale, was an instant success and helped put 3 Floyds on the map. Since then, the brewery has released numerous award-winning beers, including “Dark Lord,” a Russian Imperial Stout, and “Gumballhead,” an American Wheat Beer.

One of the keys to 3 Floyds’ success is their focus on quality and consistency. The brewery uses only the highest quality ingredients and adheres to strict brewing techniques to ensure that each batch of beer is of the highest quality. Additionally, 3 Floyds has a dedicated team of brewers who are passionate about their craft and are constantly experimenting with new recipes and brewing techniques.

Another factor that sets 3 Floyds apart is their unique branding and marketing. The brewery has a distinct visual style, with their beers featuring elaborate labels and artwork created by local artists. 3 Floyds has also created a cult following through their limited-edition releases, such as their annual “Dark Lord Day” festival, where they release their highly coveted “Dark Lord” beer.

In recent years, 3 Floyds has faced some challenges, including supply chain issues and a temporary closure of their brewpub due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the brewery has remained resilient, and their beers continue to be in high demand among beer enthusiasts around the world.

In addition to their dedication to quality and unique branding, 3 Floyds has also been known for their collaborations with other breweries and businesses. They have collaborated with breweries from around the world, including Mikkeller, Amager Bryghus, and De Struise Brouwers. They have also collaborated with non-brewing businesses such as Mastodon, a heavy metal band, to create unique beers with interesting flavors.

3 Floyds has also been active in the community, supporting local organizations and events. They have been involved in various fundraisers and charity events and have sponsored local sports teams. In 2020, they also collaborated with other local businesses to create a beer to raise money for hospitality workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

While 3 Floyds’ success can be attributed to many factors, their commitment to innovation and experimentation has been key. They are constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the world of craft beer and are not afraid to take risks and try new things. They have also been known for their willingness to share their knowledge and expertise with other brewers, helping to advance the craft beer industry as a whole.

Despite their success, 3 Floyds has faced criticism from some members of the craft beer community for their limited releases and exclusivity. Many of their most popular beers are only available in small quantities and are difficult to obtain, leading to long lines and high prices on the secondary market. However, the Floyd family has defended their approach, stating that they want their beers to be enjoyed by those who appreciate their craft and dedication to quality.

Today, 3 Floyds Brewing Co. is one of the most respected and well-known craft breweries in the United States. The brewery has won numerous awards and accolades, including being named one of the top 50 breweries in the world by RateBeer.com. Despite their success, the Floyd family remains dedicated to their craft and continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in the world of craft beer.

Looking to the future, 3 Floyds plans to continue to innovate and push the boundaries of what is possible in the world of craft beer. They recently announced plans to build a new production facility in Munster, Indiana, that will allow them to increase production and distribution while maintaining their commitment to quality and consistency.

3 Floyds Brewing Co. is a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and quality. The Floyd family’s commitment to brewing unique, flavorful beers has led to their success and has helped to shape the craft beer industry as we know it today.

Three Floyds Brewing Co. is a Midwestern brewery dedicated to crafting a wide and “not normal” range of quality ales and lagers. Since our founding in 1996 by Nick Floyd we have been brewing uncompromising and full-flavored beers for a range of tastes.
